The Anti-Thiel Principle

Posted by: Poster Image

Summary Argument: Peter Thiel describes a process where the best companies avoid competition and aim for ubiquitous monopolies. These companies focus on sales, marketing and business development at least as much as product. In contrast, the Anti-Thiel Principle holds that the best products are products that you will never know about because they focus only on products.  1156 tokens

In his insightful book Zero to One, Peter Thiel describes a strategic blueprint for businesses to follow in order to achieve market dominance. The central thesis, put in a contrarian form, was to avoid competition and aim for monopoly. He writes how the dominant companies of today (Google, Amazon, Apple, etc.) use sleight-of-hand, where they claim to be in constant competition, but really have well-worn monopolistic businesses.
In one of the main chapters, Thiel talks about how sales and marketing is an often overlooked tool that these companies use to become quasi-monopolies. The key insight is that having a great product isn't enough. You need to be able to sell the product. You need to be able to market the product. You need business development deals to get distribution. You need to become ubiquitous. Everyone knows Apple and Amazon.
I term these ubiquitous companies - "Thiel Companies". Everyone knows who they are, because they have followed the blueprint that Thiel outlined in Zero to One. If Thiel's main thesis in the book is to avoid competition and become a Thiel Company through sales and marketing, then a corollary falls out from this thesis. I term this corollary the "Anti-Thiel Principle" in the sense that it is the opposite of a Thiel Company (not in the sense that I'm "anti" Peter Thiel himself). This corollary says that "the best products are products that you'll never know about".
There is a class of product being made by creators that are 100% product focused and 0% marketing focused. The creators spend all their time building and crafting and none of that time trying to sell or do business development deals. They just innovate and innovate. And the end result is a product better than a product where over 50% of the effort is spent on non-product details.
The paradox of the Anti-Thiel Principle is that you will never know about these products. You won't use them. You won't even believe that such products exist. All because they aren't Thiel Companies. But they do exist. They exist in the wide swallow of all the thousands of products that don't cross the mainstream chasm. Within the bad ideas and scams and other failures, are Anti-Thiel gems.
