On The Suboptimality Of Human Life

Posted by: Poster Image

Summary Argument: It's common to assess human progress by focusing on the difference between the past and present. This article argues that the more important examination of humanity should be to compare the present to a future ideal. And currently, human life is unimaginably suboptimal.  1198 tokens

People are constantly comparing human history to the human present. Depending on the timeframe you take, one can argue whether things are better or worse. Under shorter timeframes, it's quite possible that a regression occurs and things become worse. But then there are people like Steven Pinker who argue that human progress over the long term has continued to achieve tangible, beneficial results.
This notion of long term progress misses the bigger phenomenon. It's like we're looking at the back of someone's head instead of their face when trying to identify them. Rather than just looking how far humans have come, have progressed, since the beginning - we should be looking at how much further remains for humans to achieve. In other words, it's like we are focusing on the 0.1% of the spectrum and not looking at the 99.9% which remains.
If you consider a typical life and then compare that life to an imagined ideal, and then take the difference between the two - you'll see the 99.9%. A few examples: How many minutes of an average life are spent sick? Depressed? Unhappy? Bored? Asleep? How many things do you want to buy and don't? How many people do you want to befriend but who don't befriend you? How many people do you want to love, but who don't love you back? How many things do you wish you could accomplish, but haven't? How many family members do you have that have died? How many mistakes have you made?
This list could go on and on and on. And this is just the typical list for a typical life. It doesn't consider a life that has a different body that lives in a different world that lives in a different culture and a different time. It's almost impossible to imagine a utopia. The more you imagine, the more you could then imagine. And this just shows how suboptimal things are right now.
The fact that things are so suboptimal, doesn't mean things are bad. It just means that there is much further to go. Optimists need to push closer to utopia. When life finally gets closer to optimal, then is the time to do the Pinker studies. To see if the small moves towards the final utopia are progressive or regressive. But we're miles and miles away from that point.
