Hacker News Submission Best Practices

Posted by: Poster Image

Summary Argument: Even the best content, submitted at the optimal time, is unlikely to get read by the wider Hacker News community. The HN firehose is just too large. This article discusses several best practices when submitting a post to Hacker News.  30 tokens

The most obvious practice, but hardest to achieve, is to submit surprising content. It's easy to submit filler content, but that content is almost certainly something that is of no interest to the broader Hacker News community. Posts that contain the most information to the reader are those posts where the reader learns something. Even better are those posts where you explain a truth that most people assume is false.
When posting a surprise, it's best to highlight the surprise in the title - in order to attract readers to get to the surprising content. Most Hacker News users just browse the title and use it as a proxy for whether the content is interesting. So the small space allowed for titles must catch the attention of readers immediately. Use that title space to clearly describe the main thesis.
If you have surprisingly interesting content, you don't need to game the system. Don't try to sybil attack the submission with sock puppet accounts. Don't ask your friends to upvote the post. Don't try to buy upvotes. Hacker News has been around for long enough to have seen all these types of attacks. Gaming the system will just backfire. Your post won't be seen.
Even the best content that is submitted without gaming is unlikely to get read by the wider community. There are just too many posts being submitted. The firehose is too big and the prime slots are too small. One best practice is to avoid the weekday rush of submissions. You will have a better chance of being read if there are less posts to compete with. Try posting on the weekends or weekday nights which are the slowest traffic days on Hacker News.
Even if you time the post, you still are unlikely to get read by the wider community. That's why you need to embrace the randomness of Hacker News. HN is like a giant lottery where most of the time you won't win a slot. You can have a post that contains the secret of life and there is still horrible odds that the post will be read. Take solace in the fun of buying the lottery ticket even if you probably won't win.
